San City posterThink of Australia Day at the beach, then throw in a licensed bar, Triple J’s Hottest 100, plenty of mates, and live performances from two great Aussie artists. Sand City is back.

The City Beach Volleyball Courts on Pirie Street in Adelaide’s CBD will be hosting the Australia Day party for the second year in a row, and they’re gearing up for a big one.

The Hottest 100 Countdown will provide entertainment during the day, but after the number one song is announced Illy and Owl Eyes will take to the stage.

Last year hip hop artist Illy and Owl Eyes (AKA Brooke Addamo) teamed up for the single ‘It Can Wait’ which came in at #29 in the Hottest 100. “In a perfect world I’d get up there” Illy says about this year’s top spot, but he thinks Gotye will end up taking it out. “Gotye must have it in the bag, and it’s totally deserved.”

Chatting to Illy, he said his ultimate Australia Day would mean “stacks of mates, drinks, BBQ, and the J’s playing.” He’s looking forward to Sand City and says “Adelaide crowds are always up for it, and are very vocal. It makes the vibe really great when you have that sort of crowd.”

With organisers saying that “both artists have a huge chance to feature in the 100 countdown” Illy agrees that featuring will be an added reason to celebrate on the day.

Sand City officially kicked off last year, but organiser Jarrad Wright says it really all started about six or seven years ago with a party at their mate’s place. Once the annual party started drawing in hundreds they decided something had to be done, and Sand City was created.

Last year party goers filled up City Beach with beach towels, inflatable furniture, and even paddling pools to either embrace or beat the heat.

Drinks won’t hurt either when the temperature is predicted to hit 34ºC. Sponsors Coopers, Bulmers, Midori, and Jägermeister will make sure the drinks keep flowing throughout the day.

Sand City starts at 12 noon and continues through till 10:30pm. Tickets are $60 and can be bought online at Venuetix or by emailing Jarrad from Thomas-Alexander Events at jarrad@thomas-alexander.com.au.
