E for Ethel : A treasure under the vines in North Adelaide

26 April 2012 7,843 views No Comment

Under the vines in the Melbourne Street Gardens Complex, at 116 Melbourne Street North Adelaide, is a shop you need to discover for yourself: E for Ethel.

Owned by operated by Amanda Matulick and Dan Harland, this store is a hidden treasure. They’ve filled the lively space with quality design and craft objects that are more affordable that you’d expect, and have created a homey cafe filled with classic furniture pieces and comfy chairs, perfect for enjoying great coffee and sweet treats.

At E for Ethel you’ll find a range of one-of-a-kind pieces that you won’t find elsewhere in Adelaide. Amanda seeks out beautiful objects that are handmade, sustainable and (mostly) Australian, with a focus on stocking talented local artists and craftspeople!

For Amanda Matulick, E for Ethel feels like something she was always meant to do.

“I’ve travelled, studied PR and worked in the arts and not for profit industries, but throughout my life had this urge to create a coffee shop space,” she said. “About 2 years ago, I had a click moment when I just knew it was time to give it a go.”

Amanda’s sweetheart Dan was fully supportive and has been there ever step of the way to help Amanda get E for Ethel up and running. He rocks the coffee machine on weekends (mid week he moonlights as a panel beater) and is having a blast creating delicious coffee and his own brand of funky latte art.

E for Ethel promise to give you great tasting coffee thanks to fair-trade, single origin beans from boutique coffee roasters De Groot Coffee Co. They also serve the Barossa Valley’s Scullery Made Tea and Oracle Organic Juices.

Amanda says that finding pieces for the shop isn’t hard; the difficulty has been to choose between them. She does a lot of research and finds that blog-hopping is a great way to discover new things.

Some of her favourite discoveries include:

  • Gretel Girl Draws (SA): stunningly detailed hand illustrations layered onto vintage fabrics then finished in embroidery hoops with hand-stitched detail
  • Me and Amber (NSW): silhouette style hand screen-printed products
  • Delilah Devine (SA): brooches, prints and classic vintage flying ducks
  • That Vintage (TAS): Tasmanian Myrtle timber jewellery
  • Lindsay Pemberton (NZ): vintage tea cup bangles (can’t resist the odd offshore artist!)
