Callum’s The Starter Kitchen is out now!

Callum Hann and his new bookCallum Hann has been busy. Since his time on MasterChef Australia in 2010, he’s been working  in some of Australia’s best kitchens, including The Press Club, Maha, Hellenic Republic, and PM24.

Back in Adelaide he’s found time to launch Sprout cooking classes, a joint venture with dietitian Themis Chryssidisto, to show people how easy it is to cook healthy meals that fit into their lifestyles.

Add cooking demonstrations, talks, food and wine shows and working with the Cancer Council and Wesley’s Food for Families Appeal to his schedule and you wonder how Callum’s had time to pen his first cookbook, The Starter Kitchen.

Launched in Adelaide last week, The Starter Kitchen helps the inexperienced cook get started on their cooking journey, the food journey of a lifetime.

We asked Callum why he chose to write a book for cooks who are just starting out.

The Starter Kitchen cookbook

“When I moved out of home four years ago,” he told us, “I was surprised that, considering how many books are out there, nothing really catered to my specific need.”

“There is often a lot of assumed knowledge, which can be quite daunting for people new to cooking. I have written the book to include all my tips and tricks on starting in your own kitchen,” he said, “from how to save money shopping, to setting up your kitchen and pantry, to the recipes you need to feed yourself and impress your friends.”

Inside you’ll find over 60 simple recipes that use readily available ingredients, menu ideas for dinner parties and other special occasions, and answers to common cooking questions such as “Why do you need to rest meat after cooking?” and “Why do you add salt to the water when cooking vegetables?.

With The Starter Kitchen you can learn how to roast a chicken, cook the perfect steak and make the most of a few lonely eggs. Recipes include super-quick chicken satay, homemade pizza and coconut panna cotta.

What’s next for Callum Hann? He will continue to be the spokesperson for the Adelaide Produce Market and their Burst Of Freshness program, and has become the ambassador for Jamie’s Home Cooking Skills, a fantastic program from Jamie Oliver for high schools around Australia.

And hopefully there’s another great cookbook in the works!

The Starter Kitchen is available at Dymocks Adelaide (they helped Callum launch the book in Victoria Square) and other good bookstores.
