Adelaide is a small city relative to others in Australia, however we are starting to score some big events. On top of Mad March, Adelaide is also sporting the 2012 Australian Swimming Championships (which serve as Australia’s 2012 London Olympics swimming trials) at the new world-class state aquatic centre at Marion.

The world’s latest and greatest, mixed with some old time favourites in swimming circles, have travelled down to Adelaide to take a shot at the London Olympic Team. There have been upsets (Thorpie not making the team), and triumphs (SA boy Hayden Stoeckel make the team for 100m Backstroke, for example) and these are all over the news.

What I’d like to comment on though, is the way that this crowd really gave the swimmers a home town roar. At the sessions I went to, every swimmer got a big cheers from the crowd, most swimmers had some fan tweets rolling across the big screen. Everyone stayed and got involved the whole way through every night, even those finishing later than scheduled due to swim-offs at the end for finals opportunities.

SwimmingSA and Swimming Australia deserve a pat on the back too – for getting the crowd involved with the event. Kiss and cuddle cams, dancing Buckingham palace security guards, and other such fillers definitely help lift the atmosphere.

“They’ve had a really good run this time round” one spectator said, “it’s nice to see a good crowd rocking up each night to support the swimmers”.

The 2012 Australian Swimming Championships ran from the 15th to the 22nd of March at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre at Marion in Adelaide, with live results streamed to the swimming australia website at http://swimming.org.au.
